Students and staff in HPEDSB have diverse backgrounds and beliefs. HPEDSB acknowledges commemorative
dates, which include 13 priority days that may be observed by students and
staff based on their individual beliefs.
Eid al-Fitr, which means
“festival of breaking the fast” in Arabic, is
acknowledged as a priority day at HPEDSB. It is celebrated at the end of
Ramadan, one of the most sacred times for the religion of Islam. This year, Eid
al-Fitr will take place on either Tuesday, April 9 or Wednesday April 10, 2024
depending on the sighting of the moon.
During Ramadan, observing Muslims take part in extra
prayer and fast from sunup to sundown for one month. For many, Ramadan is more
than fasting—it is a time of goal-setting, renewal (physically and
spiritually), acts of charity, solitude, sleep deprivation (due to waking up
pre-dawn and going to sleep late because of night prayers) and reading the
Qur’an.
