Important update: School Code of Conduct and cell phone use

Cell phone use

As another school year begins, we remain focused on creating the best possible learning environments for every student.

This is to remind you that we are in the second year of implementing our updated School Code of Conduct, which includes important expectations around the use of personal mobile devices during the school day. These updates are part of a province-wide directive from the Ontario Ministry of Education, designed to reduce distractions in classrooms and help students stay engaged in their learning.

To support these goals, the Ministry requires that personal mobile devices not be used during instructional time, except in specific circumstances. Our school is committed to upholding this standard and promoting a focused, respectful and inclusive learning environment.

Mobile device use, Ministry of Education guidelines

Students may only use personal mobile devices during instructional time under the following conditions:

  • For educational purposes, as directed by a teacher or other educator
  • For health and medical reasons
  • To support special education needs

Expectations by grade level

  • Kindergarten to Grade 6: Personal devices must be powered off or set to silent and stored out of sight throughout the entire instructional day, including breaks and lunch.
  • Grades 7 to 12: Devices must be powered off and stored out of view during class time.

Please note that individual schools may have additional expectations related to personal device use. Students are responsible for how their devices are used and for complying with these school-based expectations. Failure to follow the guidelines may result in appropriate school-based consequences.

Restricted access to social media on school networks

In alignment with Ministry guidelines, social media platforms are restricted on all school networks and devices for both students and staff.

The following platforms are included in the restriction:

Facebook, Instagram, X, Snapchat, TikTok, DeepSeek, Tumblr, Periscope, Yubo, Clubhouse, WhatsApp, Kik, Twitch, Ask.fm, Douyin, Reddit, Tinder, Quora, Discord, Houseparty, Threads, Telegram.

We appreciate your continued support in helping us maintain a learning environment that prioritizes student success, well-being and responsible technology use. If you have any questions or would like more information about these expectations, please contact your child’s school.
