Dramatic Arts

ALC1O1

Integrated Arts • Grade 9 • Open

This course integrates two or more of the arts (dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts), giving students the opportunity to produce and present integrated artworks created individually or collaboratively. Students will demonstrate innovation as they learn and apply concepts, styles and conventions unique to the various arts and acquire skills that are transferable beyond the classroom. Students will use the creative process and responsible practices to explore solutions to integrated arts challenges.

ADA2O1

Drama • Grade 10 • Open

This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences.

Instrumental Music • Grade 10 • Open

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures.

Instrumental Music • Grade 11 • University/College Preparation

This course provides students with opportunities to develop their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music, including traditional, commercial, and art music. Students will apply the creative process when performing appropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ the critical analysis processes when reflecting on, responding to, and analysing live and recorded performances. Students will consider the function of music in society and the impact of music on individuals and communities. They will explore how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers.

AMU4M1

Instrumental Music • Grade 12 • University/College Preparation

This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music. Students will perform traditional, commercial, and art music, and will respond with insight to live and recorded performances. Students will enhance their understanding of the function of music in society and the impact of music on themselves and various communities and cultures. Students will analyse how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers.

Music • Vocal

AMV2O1

Music – Vocal • Grade 10 • Open

This course focuses on the development of the voice as an instrument of expression. Students will be involved in multipart singing of various secular vocal music. Emphasis will be placed on popular music from the 20th century. Further concentration is based on small ensemble and solo performances, listening skills, music history and theory.

Prerequisite: None

AMV3M1

Music – Vocal • Grade 11 • University/College

This course will focus on the development of the voice as an instrument of expression with an emphasis on music of the 20th Century in solo and part singing. This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis and performance of various kinds of music including baroque and classical music, popular music, and Canadian and non Western music. Students will perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, complete detailed creative activities, and analyze and evaluate live and recorded performances. They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and imaginative abilities.

Prerequisite: AMU1O1 or AMV2O1

AMV4M1

Music – Vocal • Grade 12 • University/College

This course is a continuation of AMV3M1. Emphasis is placed on further development of the voice through small ensemble, solo singing and sight singing. Both sacred and secular genres will be explored.

AMG2O1

Music – Guitar • Grade 10 • Open

This course focuses on the development of basic chord and picking techniques for the beginner on the acoustic guitar. Further concentration is based on small ensemble and solo performances, listening skills, music history and theory. Emphasis will be placed on Classical, Blues and Rock and Roll music. Students must supply their own acoustic guitar.

AMG3M1

Music – Guitar • Grade 11 • University/College

This course is designed for the music student who is intent on advancing their repertoire and level of playing skill and technique through a focus on the further development of chord and picking techniques as well as creation through song writing and sound recording. This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis and performance of various kinds of music including Classical, Blues and /Rock and Roll music. Students must supply their own guitar.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts • Grade 10 • Open

This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.  This course involves a wide variety of art activities such as printmaking, building in clay and/or other 3-dimensional materials, drawing in graphite, charcoal and pastel, pen & ink and markers, painting in acrylic and watercolour, and the combination of media into mixed-media artworks.

AVI3M1

Visual Arts • Grade 11 • University/College Preparation

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studio work that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, as well as the creation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emergent technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process when evaluating their own work and the work of others.

AVI4M1

Visual Arts • Grade 12 • University/College

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.

AVI4E1

Visual Arts • Grade 12 • Workplace

This course focuses on a practical approach to a variety of art and design projects related to the workplace. Students will use the creative process to produce a traditional and/or digital portfolio of their work in a variety of media. Students may focus on various aspects of visual arts, including advertising, ceramics, fashion design, graphic arts, jewellery design, and/or web design.

Prerequisite: AVI1O1 or AVI2O1 (or permission of the teacher)

AWC3O1

Visual Arts • Ceramics • Grade 11 • Open

This course is hands-on!  Projects involve using clay to build both functional and decorative objects.  Students will learn practical skills including hand building methods, surface decoration techniques, use of a variety of tools, glazing, firing and maintaining a ceramics studio.  Students will apply the elements and principles of design, will develop building approaches and will document and reflect on their creative process.  Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary and historical context.  Students will learn to document their work.

Prerequisite:  one other art course

Visual ArtsAWC4M1

Visual Arts • Ceramics • Grade 12 • University/College

This course will provide senior students who formerly enjoyed Grade 11 Ceramics with an opportunity to build on skills for creating both functional and sculptural studio work at a more advanced level.  Through this course there is ample opportunity to work toward developing a stronger portfolio for students who are interested in pursuing Visual Art at the post-secondary level.  Projects are mostly student-driven.  Drawing skill and art history knowledge will continue to be developed.
